Microsoft’s SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 Extended Support comes to an end in July 2019. What does this mean? There will be no more bug fixes and security updates from Microsoft, leaving your systems vulnerable to attacks.
However, this doesn’t mean that your 2019 is going to be full of cyber attacks and GDPR horrors. Not one to leave their customers in the lurch, Microsoft have given SQL Server 2008/R2 users a couple of options:
Migrate to Azure: Late last year Microsoft announced they would offer an additional 3 years Extended Support (including those all important security patches!) for anyone who migrated their workloads over to Azure.
Upgrade to SQL Server 2017: Upgrade to a contemporary database such as SQL Server 2017 and benefit from cumulative updates, including security patching.
